Simply put, a
ball joint is a bearing. This bearing allows movement in the X, Y, Z axes and reduces vibration of the moving link. Ball joints in cars and trucks connect the upper control arm (UCA) to the steering knuckle. They have a rod attached to the joint and the bottom is secured with a cage nut. These nuts have cutouts to allow for cotter pins to be attached, preventing the nut from falling out.
What is an adjustable ball joint?
The alignment of the car can change due to normal wear and tear and accidents, potholes and even hitting the curb. If you've ever felt your car pull to one side or the other and seen uneven or odd tire wear, chances are your car has an alignment problem.
It's a good change if you're making clanking or grinding noises when going over bumps or steering, you have joint problems.
It is the perfect place to change positioning angles such as camber and caster due to the position of the ball joints in the suspension system. This is where the adjustable ball joint comes into play. These specialized parts feature sliding sections that allow qualified technicians to adjust alignment angles to correct imperfections in the vehicle, adjust for height variations, and adjust for different tire configurations and even performance. The parts also allow technicians to adjust to the casters, a steering angle that is crucial when the height of a car or truck changes.
